In 1876 Tomato Ketchup was introduced, General George Cluster came to the end of his rope at Little Big Horn, Alexander Graham Bell applied for a patent on a device called a telephone and just down the road a fellow Scot named John Donaghy started a rope-making company.
The firm prospered and became a vital part of South Dunedin. While the relentless advance of technology has left a workforce much reduced the factory on Bradshaw St continues to this day. One year earlier on the 2nd of July 1875 this Hotel was established and old photographs would suggest that a few minutes after the Lads & Ladies clocked off a Donaghy's Rope and Twine and goodly number clocked on here to truly sign-off on a hard day.
The Hotel was aptly named with those ties that bind in mind - the camaraderie of workers and colleagues who over the years enjoyed many a pint between these walls.
